Just Yell Fire
About Us - A Non-profit raising awareness and putting a stop to the assault and abduction of girls 11-19
The problem
There is a community out there, girls 11 to 19, who according to the YWCA face a 1 in 4 risk of sexual assault and according to the Department of Justice could be one of the 114,000 attempted non-family abductions each year in the US. More than 550,000 registered sex offenders are on the streets (and many more not yet caught) and teenage girls are pretty much on their own because parents can’t be everywhere, nor can the police.
Just Yell Fire, a non-profit based in Portland, Oregon with offices in Vancouver, Washington, has taken on this problem and has the sole mission of keeping teenage girls safe from assault, abduction, and even death. We are teaching girls they have the right to fight back and giving them the skills to put a stop to date rape as well as to put predators out of business. Since 2006 we have helped keep more than 1 million girls safe in 44 countries. Our Solution Just Yell Fire has a four-program strategy to put a stop to the sexual assault and abduction of middle and high school age girls. Movie
In 2006, Dallas Jessup, founder and spokesperson for Just Yell Fire, gathered community support to produce a 46 minute instructional film that teaches girls personal safety awareness, some street-fighting skills to get out of attack situations, and presents a Dating Bill of Rights. Just Yell Fire, the film, is available as a free download here on our site (www.justyellfire.com) or a Free DVD is mailed to any girl without Internet access. The DVD was one of the most downloaded production-length films of 2007 with even increasing popularity in 2008. Police agencies, schools, shelters, teachers, parents, and organization leaders around the globe have written to applaud the effort as well as to let us know they are using Just Yell Fire as a teaching tool to keep their girls safe. >> The Film Speaking and Seminars Matt Wadzita, one of the stars of Just Yell Fire, Dallas, and her street fighting coach (and co-creator of Just Yell Fire) Chad Von Dette speak to groups around the United States including high schools, middle schools, law enforcement events, at-risk teen programs, corporate conferences, and other venues.
Girls respond to the demonstrations, the movie, and personal safety advice with great enthusiasm as they learn they have rights too. It is amazing to see even the least athletic teens realize they don’t have to live in fear of assault – in just over an hour they learn how to get away from an attacker twice their size, every time. >> Seminars Train the Trainer Our Train the Trainer program was developed to get the Just Yell Fire skills out to millions of girls as our small team can only be in so many places for seminars and speaking engagements. The concept is to train a few teachers and coaches from each school district so they can take Just Yell Fire back to their schools and share with their peers. 1000 trainers can save a generation of girls.
The program was developed with teachers, coaches, teens, law enforcement, and martial artists to provide the tools and training to incorporate safety and self defense for girls 11 to 19 into their middle and high school curriculum. While our initial focus was exclusively on teachers and coaches, we also now have trainees from the private sector getting certified so that they can hold private seminars, teach within their organizations, and others simply to learn how to keep their families safe. The intensive two day program covers three areas: Safety, Street-Fighting Techniques. Lobbying We believe safety awareness and self defense should be a part of every middle and high school girls’ education. Toward that end we are working with legislators and educators in several states to pass legislation making such instruction a fundamental part of every school’s curriculum.
